Bio
As a bassist, singer, songwriter, and guitarist Daniel has performed to audiences of thousands across the United
States, Japan, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Canada, and the United Kingdom with the rock bands Ozma, the Elected, and the Gowns. "Bass Player" Magazine presented a
feature article on him in June of 2003. He has scored multiple short films and recorded and performed on over a dozen albums for record labels such as Sub Pop,
Kung Fu, and Sony BMG. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Composition from UCLA. Daniel's rigorous university training emphasized music theory, piano
performance, voice, film scoring, electronic music, folk music of various cultures including Mexico and Indonesia, and jazz guitar studies with Kenny Burrell. An
alumnus of the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Daniel spent his high school years studying composition, jazz guitar, and voice, and was a member of
the LACHSA Vocal Jazz Ensemble, winning recognition at the Monterey Jazz Festival. He has been awarded the California Arts Scholar medal and attended the
California State Summer School for the Arts at the California Institute of the Arts twice (1996, 1997).
Teaching Philosophy
"In my teaching, I emphasize a strong foundation in harmony and theory, solid ear training, and directly addressing
each student's individual needs in my teaching. Each student learns in a different way, so I often explain musical concepts using various terms or analogies,
until I have reached all my students. Similarly, each of the twelve tones in the equal temperament tuning system commonly used in modern popular music has a
unique character -- a specific relationship to "Do," the tonic of the key. Understanding these harmonic resonances and their tendencies is the key to musical
expression."
