Bio


Matt Gordy is a drummer / percussionist / composer / arranger who crosses over into many musical genres. Born December 3, 1954 in Buffalo, NY. His early musical experiences were piano lessons at age 7. He moved to Newton, MA when he was twelve. He earned a bachelor's degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1976. His teachers were Vic Firth, Jaki Byard and George Russell. Later on he also studied with Alan Dawson and Charlie Banacos.

After graduating from NEC he won the principal timpanist job of the Maracaibo Symphony Orchestra in Maracaibo, Venezuela. He performed in that orchestra for almost 9 years (1977-1985). While living in Venezuela he also formed two groups; El Primer Trio and Islas. They performed all over Venezuela from 1979-1985. In 1985 he returned to Boston to continue his career as a freelance musician. He performs regularly with Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Ballet and the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.

Teaching Philosophy


Matt likes to change his teaching style among his classrooms. He likes to keep his students on their toes and always ready to change gears. He believes that this prepares students for their future careers in the industry. Students should be exposed to all different levels, ways that certain techniques are taught, as well as a variety of knowledge that is needed to succeed.
