Philip Ingram
R&B / Soul / Pop / Singer / Songwriter / Producer
Bio
I was born in 1958 and raised in Akron, Ohio. I come from a musical family. There are 6 children who all sing and play
an instrument but only 2 of us decided to do music for a living, my brother James & myself. In December of 1976 the band SWITCH was formed. This consisted of Greg
Williams, Jody Sims, Bobby DeBarge, Tommy DeBarge, Eddie Fluellen, and myself. SWITCH was signed to Motown Records in May/1977 and went on to record 5 albums for
the Label. Our 1st two albums went GOLD with such hits as "They'll Never Be", "I Wanna Be Closer", "Best Beat In Town", "Love Over & Over", and "I Call Your
Name". Since 1984 I've gone behind the scenes and have worked with various artists and worked on quite a few films and commercials. I've also written songs for
various artists. Currently I still sing for TV & radio commercials, work on films, Radio Stations IDs, and recordings. In addition I'm doing some production of
new & upcoming artists along with Rex Salas. I'm also doing live performances with Sheena Easton. SWITCH has gotten back together doing shows around the country
as well.
Teaching Philosophy
"I've have the privilege of working with quite a few vocalists since I've been working on records, films, commercials,
and performing live professionally since I was 18 years old. I've produced and coached many vocalists on recordings, so my teaching style comes from the
production side. I start each session to see what it is they want to accomplish; in other words, making it all about them. I didn't want a one class fits all-that
won't work for everyone. I'd rather help them through their weaknesses and reinforce their strengths so they'll be more well-rounded as singers and ready for the
music industry.
I've had quite a few students have mental breakthroughs since I approach them much like a producer would approach a
recording artist. Many students lack confidence and we work through their individual mental blocks as if they're performing a record."
